What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a commonly occurring mineral form of fluorine.

How does fluoride get into my drinking water?

Fluoride occurs naturally in most water supplies, but has also been added to the water supply in an effort to prevent tooth decay in children. Recent studies have disputed the long-held belief in the benefit of water fluoridation.

What are the health effects of fluoride?

Although fluoride is touted as a healthy addition to water, long term exposure to fluoride can result in bone disease. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for fluoride at a concentration of 4 milligrams per liter (mg/L).
